Celebrating the history and heritage of iCQ Awards
Since 2008, iCQ Awards has built a reputation for doing things differently.
While many awarding organisations have followed traditional routes, iCQ Awards was founded on a bold belief: that technology, innovation and a learner-centred approach could transform vocational education for the better.
Nearly two decades later, that belief continues to shape everything we do.
Where it all began: A vision ahead of its time
Long before online learning became standard practice, two of the founders of iCQ were already pushing boundaries.
In May 2000, they created the first web-based e-portfolio platform and learner management system. This was a pioneering step at a time when internet connections were unreliable, 3G was just emerging, smartphones and tablets weren’t commonplace, and organisations were still getting to grips with “t-internet”.
Despite these challenges, the platform attracted early adopters such as BT, Capita, JHP Training, several police forces, and a range of colleges and training providers. These organisations saw the potential of digital portfolios to enhance assessment processes, improve transparency and support learner engagement.
However, many awarding organisations were slower to adapt.
It became clear that, for most, embracing digital assessment would require a significant cultural shift, one that few were ready to make.
From innovation to awarding organisation: The birth of iCQ
By 2008, several e-portfolio customers had encouraged the founders to take the next step. If traditional awarding organisations were unwilling to embrace technology-led assessment, then why not create an awarding organisation that would?
And so, iCQ Awards was formed with a distinctive vision:
- To offer not just an e-portfolio, but a fully integrated learning platform, LMS, content delivery system and funding management tool
- To deliver qualifications directly, rather than simply providing the tech behind them
- And to deliver training providers “another way” – a fresh alternative to the standard “vanilla” approach of the time.
It was a bold move, but one that resonated with the sector.
Recognition to growth
iCQ gained regulatory recognition in 2010, beginning a new chapter supporting a broad and diverse network of learning providers.
In 2025, iCQ joined The Workforce Development Trust group, home to:
• Skills for Health
• Skills for Justice
• SFJ Awards
• People 1st International
Becoming part of The Workforce Development Trust family strengthened our ability to support centres and learners with a wider range of services, expertise and sector-led insight. Collaboration across the group ensures that iCQ customers (present and future) benefit from the shared strengths of a trusted, mission-driven organisation focused on workforce development.
Since then, we’ve worked with:
- Small, start-up training organisations
- Large employers
- Colleges
- Local authorities
- And national levy-paying organisations.
Many of the providers who joined us in the early days continue to be approved centres today – growing with us as qualifications, apprenticeships and policy landscapes have evolved across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Established strength
Alongside our work as an awarding organisation, iCQ has become the go-to End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO) for several sectors, particularly travel and tourism and facilities management.
We also have a strong and growing presence across hospitality, management and team leading, business administration, customer service, health and social care, and early years education.
We support both levy-paying employers and prime contractors working with subcontractors, adapting our approach to meet diverse organisational needs.
Our sector heritage
Continuing the legacy of innovation
What began with a groundbreaking idea in 2000 has grown into a trusted, tech-enabled awarding organisation with a strong sector presence and a commitment to doing things differently.
Today, iCQ Awards continues to:
- Innovate in digital learning and assessment
- Adapt to sector challenges
- Support providers of all sizes
- Champion high-quality vocational training across the UK.
With the strength of The Workforce Development Trust behind us and a history rooted in forward-thinking innovation, the future is bright. We look forward to continuing this journey with the organisations and learners we serve.
